I get asked all the time “what's’ the secret to building strength?” Well, I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but there is no secret, no shortcuts, and no luck. The word luck in the lifting world is a direct insult to people that have amassed the strength that they possess. Strength is earned, in life and in the gym. I’ve never met someone I considered strong who had been gifted with their abilities. It’s just how the world works. You have to collect some scars, shed some tears, and feel a little pain in order to grow.
Contrary to what most people believe , true strength training is not about your muscles but about your mind. In any endeavor mental focus delivers more than any physical transformation. The meathead way of picking up weights and setting them down will only get you so far. At some point it is crucial to focus and develop a mind-muscle connection in order to truly get strong. The cliché quote of “if you believe it, you can achieve it”, is actually extremely powerful. People may believe in you and your goals but if you don’t personally invest and believe that you will succeed, you will fail.
So what’s all this talk about belief have to do with you gaining strength? Like all things that are strong, a foundation is a necessity. For you to get strong, your foundation must be built by developing a strong mind. Once you can hone your focus into lifting and invest fully into the process, strength will find you.
A strong mind is an invaluable tool both inside the gym, and in life. If there ever were a secret to gaining true strength, it would coincide with focus. I'll leave you with this quote that was passed down to me at the infancy of my strength gaining process... "Weak minded people will find excuses -strong minded people will find results."
